Everyone knows milk and many people drink it regularly, however, buttermilk is not that common. This is pretty sad as buttermilk contains a lot of good nutrients and comes along with lots of health and fitness benefits. However, firstly, let's have a look at what buttermilk really is.

Many people think that buttermilk consist of "butter", but that couldn't be any further from the truth. Buttermilk is the liquid left behind after churning butter out of milk. It is a bit thicker than milk and has a slight sour taste which reminds of yogurt and comes from the added lactic acid cultures to pasteurize the milk.

Only few know that buttermilk is an effective muscle building food as it contains an incredible amount of protein while being low in calories and in fat. It has only 1/4 of the amount of fat in comparison with milk. This makes buttermilk to the ideal fitness protein drink. Forget your expensive protein shakes after your workout, just buy a buttermilk and enjoy the cheaper and delicious drink. I have to admit that I had to get used to the taste, but I know that this is possible because I really hated buttermilk and know I literally love it. Since I included buttermilk as my post-workout drink into my meal, have a definitely noticed a difference in gaining muscles.
